The Team

The organisational group behind Deep End NENC is made up of local GP leaders, Newcastle University academics and experienced NHS managers.

Dave Julien | Chair

Dave has worked as GP in South Tyneside.

He is currently Clinical Director of South Tyneside CCG and CEO of First Contact Clinical.

Martin Weatherhead | Clinical Lead

Martin is a GP at Bridge View Medical Group in Sunderland.

He has had leadership roles with the Sunderland GP Alliance and All Together Better Sunderland.

Sameena Hassan | Clinical Lead

 

 

Sameena is a GP at Chopwell Primary Health Care Centre

Guy Pilkington | ICS Link

Guy is a GP in Cruddas Park in Newcastle.

He has previously chaired the Newcastle Gateshead CCG and currently chairs the NENC ICS Prevention Board.

Vivienne Branton | Education Lead

Viv is a GP at St Anthony’s Health Centre, Walker.

Her role as Educational Lead for the Deep End involves developing  Deep End training opportunities from medical school right through to GP qualification and beyond, with the aim of engaging the future workforce.

Claire Norman | GP/First5 Representative

Claire is a GP at Cruddas Park Surgery in Newcastle.

While Claire was training she was involved in co-designing the network and offering a trainee/First5 GP perspective on working in the Deep End and now works in a Deep End practice.

Sarah Sowden | Evaluation and Research

Sarah is a HEE/NIHR ICA Clinical Lecturer at Newcastle University and Honorary Consultant in Public Health within the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID), North East region.

Sarah leads a programme of applied, mixed methods research addressing health and healthcare inequalities.  This includes working in partnership to co-design and evaluate the region’s ‘Deep End’ primary care network.

Rachel Henwood | Project Manager

Prior to working with Deep End Network, Rachel was a Senior Commissioning Support Officer with NECS supporting North Tyneside and Newcastle Gateshead CCGs and joined the Deep End Team in 2020

Leisa Smith | Project Support
